3 Empowering Reasons to Foster/Adopt as a Single Parent

There’s a myth out there that to adopt or care for a foster child, your family needs to resemble something out of an ancient sitcom: one mom in an apron, one dad in a business suit. This is, indeed, a myth. At Sierra Forever Families, we strongly encourage single parents to explore foster care and adoption. In fact, nearly a quarter of adoptions are by single parents.

If you feel it in your heart to foster or adopt a child, being single is not a barrier. Whether you’re already a parent or wish to start a family, here are three empowering reasons to foster or adopt as a single parent.

#1 Your Curiosity Is Welcomed

At Sierra Forever Families, our goal is to provide you with comprehensive information about this life-changing decision. We welcome and encourage anyone with questions about foster care adoption to join us for an orientation session. Orientations take place once a month at all three of SFF’s office locations. They include a broad overview of the foster adoption process, as well as the chance to get answers to all of your questions. Orientations are casual, friendly and include snacks. Best of all, attending an orientation does not obligate you to go any further in the process. It’s strictly for your information.

#2 You’ll Never Walk Alone

The foster adoption process can be daunting, but if you think going through it as a single parent means you’ll be on your own – think again! Our goal is for children in the child welfare system to find loving forever homes. We know this is only possible through a collaborative effort between our team and the family you are creating. You’ll be trained in trauma-informed care, have access to support groups and mental health resources, network with other families and be surrounded by a team of professionals headed by a master’s level social worker. You’ll always feel supported by the Sierra Forever Families staff.

#3 A Child Out There Needs You

At Sierra Forever Families, we believe that every child deserves to grow up in an unconditionally committed home. Our mission is to transform the lives of children in foster care by building and nurturing permanent families. But we can’t fulfill our mission without you. As a single parent with the ability and desire to foster adopt, you hold the power to change a child’s life for the better, forever. There’s nothing more empowering than that.
