Family

Every time you think about it, you get excited. A wonderful child, in need of a home, running into your arms, completing your long-held wish of having the family you’ve always wanted. Now you want to make that dream into reality and you have just begun doing research on the foster to adoption process. After a couple of web searches, you start second-guessing your excitement because you keep reading that the process is intense and can take a long time.

Don’t be discouraged. We are here to support you.

Get the most accurate information

First of all, the best thing you can do to reach peace-of-mind is come to our Orientation, held monthly. The internet is filled with inaccurate information, and a lot of the difficulties families experience stem from not being properly informed on what to expect from the process. During orientation we go over all the steps involved in foster care to adoption, including realistic expectations on how long it takes to go through the system. The best part about Orientation is you can ask specific questions to help determine whether foster to adoption is right for you. You will get honest, expert answers. Such as, yes, the foster to adoption process can vary in length of time, but you will also have plenty of support along the way. Sierra staff will guide you step-by-step so you don’t lose the emotional momentum that brought you to us in the first place.

Transform waiting time into preparation time

After our families attend Orientation and make the shared decision with us to move forward in the process, the next couple of months will be filled with interviews, applications, home visits, and background checks to make sure you and your family are ready and prepared to adopt.  You can also prepare by doing the following:

  • Research and choose a pediatrician
  • Child proof your home
  • Read adoption books and articles
  • Read child development and parenting books
  • Take a child CPR course
  • Prepare your child announcement strategy

By applying your energy in preparing yourself and your home, the excitement you are feeling now will last through the entire process.
