Overview

What is Over The Edge?

Over the Edge will send 70+ participants rappelling down The Residence Inn by Marriott, a 16-story building in the heart of downtown Sacramento.

Over The Edge will raise critical funds for foster kids and at-risk youth in the Sacramento region.

Is it safe?

Absolutely. Every Over the Edge event is set up as an industrial worksite and as a result, it is compliant with all federal and state OSHA Fall Protection Standards and State Laws. Further, our policies and procedures adhere to the best practices identified by the Society of Professional Rope Access Technicians or “SPRAT”. This counsel is a strict regulatory body that has regimented guidelines and safety protocols that far exceed the OSHA, Workers Compensation and state labor codes.

How much do I have to raise or give to participate in the rappel?

In order to rappel, each participant must fundraise or donate outright at least $1,000. Stanford Youth Solutions must receive the minimum $1,000 by the day of the event, June 8, 2018. If by that time you have not reached the minimum, we will charge your credit card for the balance. Fundraising rappellers who have not started fundraising by May 1st will receive 3 motivating reminders. If by the third reminder you have not begun fundraising, we will give your spot up to the next person on the waiting list.

Do I need any experience to rappel?

No. Over The Edge will provide all the training the day of the event.

Are there weight restrictions?

Yes. Participants must weigh a minimum of 100 lbs. and must not exceed 300 lbs.

When will I rappel?

The majority of our participants will rappel on June 8th between 9am and 5pm. June 7th is reserved for sponsors and media.

Although the rappel itself will only last 10 – 15 minutes, you’ll need to set aside about two hours. We will schedule you a rappel time and will ask you to arrive one full hour earlier so that you’ll have time to sign in, put on your gear, and get up to the roof. Your actual rappel start time may be slightly earlier or later than you were assigned, depending on the flow of participants throughout the day. And we’re sure you’ll want to stick around for a while after your rappel to celebrate and take in the scene!

Can I rappel at the same time as my friend or team member?

There will be two ropes for people to rappel down. Everyone varies in how long it takes them to complete their rappel (around 10-15 minutes). It is possible that you can rappel at the same time as your friend, however, since there are many people participating before and after you, and we have to make sure the flow of rappellers is equal, we cannot guarantee that you will rappel at the same time as your friend or teammate.

What do I wear when rappelling?

Well-fitting sneakers, light hiking boots, or other soft soled shoes are recommended. No sandals, slip-on shoes, slippers, flip flops, high heels, or steel toed boots will be allowed. Athletic pants, tights and jeans are suitable. The harness goes around your legs, waist, and shoulders, so it is best to avoid anything too bulky. You can wear the OVER THE EDGE + STANFORD YOUTH SOLUTIONS T-shirt that you will be provided prior to the event. Shirts should be comfortable and without draw cords. Long hair should be tied back. You will be required to leave droppable items like keys and cell phones, or jewelry that can get caught on things, with a staff member on-site. You will be given a pair of leather gloves and a helmet when you arrive. Many people choose to wear costumes for their rappel. All costumes will need to meet the same standards as listed above. Capes will have to be approved by the Site Safety Supervisor for the main rappel. If you have a question about what alterations your costume will need, please email pictures of your costume prior to the event so our staff can check it out!

How can I practice?

The most common complaint from participants after rappelling is that their forearm got sore during the descent. The new device used alleviates much of the difficulty experienced in the past. Proper techniques like switching arms and the new device make a lot of difference. Go rock climbing at a local climbing gym! Not only does rock climbing strengthen your forearms, but also it allows you to hang in a harness. Although the harnesses we use are different. You will still get the idea of what muscles it takes to stay up-right. Get psyched! Tell your friends. You’re one of a few special people who will be doing the rappel!

Can my friends come watch me?

Yes, we encourage you to invite your friends, family members and coworkers to join us on the LANDING ZONE to cheer you on as you rappel! Unfortunately, your friends and family will not be allowed up to the rooftop, as it is a restricted access area.

Are cameras and phones allowed?

Sorry, no phones, cameras, etc. on the roof. Helmet cams that operate hands-free are permitted if you have one and want to bring it. You must supply the mounting system. Go-Pro cameras are approved; all other will require pre-approval. NOTHING GOES OVER THE EDGE WITHOUT OTE’S APPROVAL.

I have never fundraised before. Can I get some help?

Yes! When you sign up, you’ll be provided with tips, tricks, and worksheets to raise the funds quickly and painlessly. It is easier than you think!
